Gospel of Luke in Context: Why Luke Wrote His Gospel
Most people see the Gospels as a collection of stories, but Luke saw an "orderly account" that changed the course of history. As a highly-educated physician and travel companion of ...Paul, Luke used his investigative skills to ensure that believers of all generations stayed oriented toward God’s mission. We look behind the text to see how Luke’s Gospel lays the essential foundation for Christ-followers to effectively carry out Christ’s ministry on earth.
─────────────────────────
📜 GOSPEL OF LUKE: THE FOUNDATION
Discover the historical context behind Luke’s investigation. By looking through the eyes of its original audience, we see how the Gospel is not just a biography, but a strategic account proving that deliverance from the slavery of sin is available to people from all walks of life.
─────────────────────────
💡 WHAT YOU’LL DISCOVER:
* The Researcher’s Perspective: Why a non-eyewitness Gentile doctor spent years interviewing sources to provide the "orderly account" we have today.
* Deliverance for the Outsider: How Jesus revealed himself not just to the righteous, but as a "release from captivity" for those the world had overlooked.
* A Worldwide Mission: Why Luke focuses on Jesus as the "light to the nations," succeeding where others had struggled to fulfill God’s global calling.

Romans in Context: Why Paul Wrote Romans
The church in Rome was on the brink of a civil war—not over theology, but over identity. While we often read Romans as a theological textbook, it was originally a ...high-stakes intervention. After the Edict of Claudius was lifted, Jewish Christians returned to Rome to find a church that had become mostly Gentile. Paul didn’t just write a letter about Christian theology, he proclaimed Christ’s restorative work accomplished for all who have faith in Him.
─────────────────────────
📜 ROMANS: THE INTERVENTION
Discover the historical context of Paul’s upcoming plans and the growing rift that defined the first-century Roman church. Through the eyes of its original audience, we see how the gospel is a radical call for unity in a divided world.
─────────────────────────
💡 WHAT YOU’LL DISCOVER:

Why John Calls Jesus 'the Word' (It's Not What You Think)
When the Apostle John wrote, "In the beginning was the Word..." (John 1:1), who was he actually writing to, and why did he use the Greek term “ho logos” to ...introduce Jesus?
Many people assume John borrowed this concept from Greek philosophy to build a bridge to Gentile thinkers. In this video, we unpack why that popular theory doesn't hold up under scholarly scrutiny. Instead, we look at the deeply Jewish context of the Fourth Gospel to show how logos is actually an intentional, brilliant throwback to Genesis 1 and other Hebrew Scriptures.
If you’ve ever wondered why John calls Jesus "The Word" and then seemingly drops the title after the prologue, this study reveals how one single word was meant to encourage first-century believers that Jesus was their promised Messiah, who was in their Scriptures all along.

Jude Explained: How to Understand Jude 9, 14-15
As part of his exhortation, verses 9, 14-15, Jude quotes non-biblical texts. What are we to make of this? Should the Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha be viewed as inspired by Christians ...today?

TRANSCRIPT:
Anyone very familiar with the Bible will notice something strange in the letter of Jude: alongside stories that are found in the Old Testament, Jude references others that can’t be found.
These stories not found in the Hebrew Bible came from Jewish texts written between the closing of the Old Testament and the opening of the New Testament, and these texts were called the Pseudepigrapha.
Now the Pseudepigrapha is somewhat distinct from the collection known as the Apocrypha, meaning “hidden” or “obscure.” The Apocrypha contains at least 12 books considered deutero-canonical (or a secondary canon) by Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Christians, but not typically by Jews or Protestants. These were written during the same period as the pseudepigrapha, but are nowhere directly cited by a New Testament author.
While it is difficult to determine exactly how many texts belong to the Pseudepigrapha, the collection is generally viewed to be much larger than that of the Apocrypha. Their name, meaning “falsely ascribed writings,” comes from the claim of each to have been written by an Old Testament figure, which everyone knew to be false, even Jews and Christians in the first century. This false authorship claim was a literary device, similar to that which Tolkien used when he portrayed Bilbo Baggins as the author of the Hobbit. Though the Pseudepigrapha were never considered Scripture by any Christian church in any century in either the East or the West…strangely….Jude cites at least 2: 1 Enoch and the Testament of Moses. Which begs the question: did he consider them inspired?
While it’s impossible to know for certain, he did not necessarily view them that way.
First, Paul cited pagan poets. And he most definitely did not consider those texts to be inspired by God.
Second, the pseudepigrapha, along with the Apocrypha, are a rich source for the historical, political, and theological beliefs of their period. As such they may have been cited by Jude to readers familiar with these stories because they illustrated points he wanted to make. Points that were also backed up by other stories in the Hebrew Bible. Thus, he may have used them like preachers today use illustrations from books or movies…not claiming them to be more than just an illustration of a truth clearly taught in Scripture elsewhere.
And third, it has been noted that usually when the Hebrew Bible is quoted in the New Testament, it is given a formal introduction. Like “it is written” or “you have heard it said." These are missing from the citations in Jude, which may suggest that he did not view them on the same level as the undisputed canonicals.
God inspired Jude to write a short letter to urge believers to continue to contend for the faith they had been given. And Jude used illustrations from various sources, some inspired and some not, in order to convey to his readers the urgency of that task.

2 Peter 1: We are Partakers of the Divine Nature?
How does Peter understand humanity becoming partakers of the divine nature? Hellenistic Jewish thought sheds some light on this issue.

TRANSCRIPT:
In 2 Peter 1:3-4, Peter writes that God’s “divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.”
The statement “that you may become partakers of the divine nature” has troubled some people, because it seems to suggest that humans can actually become divine. But while attractive, this teaching is contrary to the testimony of Scripture. If you had to divide everything in this world into just 2 categories, on the one side you would have “God” and on the other side of an impenetrable line you would have “everything else.”
So what does Peter mean here? It will help to have some background since becoming a partaker in the divine was a Greek concept found in Hellenistic Judaism. Philo, a Jewish philosopher, around the time of Jesus wrote that virtuous people could become “divinized.” By this he didn’t mean that men became God or gods, but that they managed to escape this purely physical realm and become immortal and incorruptible. For Philo, these partakers of the divine image, remained created beings, totally distinct from God.
God created humanity to uniquely reflect his image. But we have failed to be who we were created to be. In Jesus we are transformed back into that image, and we will experience that fully at the final resurrection when our natural bodies become our incorruptible bodies. Not gods, but finally and fully reflecting the design of our Creator.

In 1 Peter 3:18-22 Peter writes:
For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, because they formerly did not obey, when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were brought safely through water. Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him. 1 Peter 3:18–22
In another video, we looked at how Peter used the preaching of the resurrected Jesus to the spirits in prison in Noah’s day as an example of the victory for believers that is on the other side of suffering and death. In this one, we’ll examine how he uses the waters of the flood to illustrate the significance of baptism, which is also a demonstration of Christ’s victory over all things, which he shares with his people.
When we read through this quickly, we might think that Peter is saying that the rite of baptism saves a person. But at the Jerusalem Council Peter stated unequivocally, “we believe that we Jews will be saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, just as Gentiles will.” Saved by grace through faith, as Paul would put it. Nevertheless, both Peter and Paul considered baptism to be a spiritually significant step for new converts, as evidenced by the emphasis placed on it in Acts and its close association with initial faith in Christ. [Some early Christians struggled to understand how baptism could have real significance and yet not be necessary for salvation. This is demonstrated by the Corinthians, who seem to have been baptizing people on behalf of dead believers who had been unable get baptized before they died. This baptism on behalf of the dead (both Paul and Peter would say) is totally is totally unnecessary.
For salvation, baptism is not essential, but it nevertheless has real significance.

1 Peter 3: Jesus Preached to Spirits in Prison? 2 Views
In 1 Peter, Christ is said to have preached to the spirits in prison. Who exactly are these spirits? When did Christ preach to them? And what was his message? ...This video explores a few options for understanding this very difficult passage.

After encouraging his readers to continue to pursue good deeds, even if they suffer for them, Peter writes:
For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit. (1 Peter 3:18)
Here, Peter encourages his readers with two things: (1) Jesus, their Lord, also suffered for doing good; and (2) though Jesus was put to death for the good that he did, at the resurrection he was raised to life not merely on a physical level, but also on a spiritual one. He became the first of the dead made fully alive, both physically and spiritually: imperishable, glorious, and powerful.
But then Peter takes a strange turn and says that when Jesus was made alive in the spirit he: went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, because they formerly did not obey, when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah while the ark was being prepared. (1 Peter 3:19-20)
Who exactly are these spirits in prison? When did Christ preach to them? And what was his message? Now I will admit that this passage is one of the most difficult in the NT, but let’s explore a couple of the main options.
There are two main views on the identity of the “spirits in prison:”
The first is that these spirits are fallen angels, or demons, awaiting final judgment. In this view, the spirits are identified as the “sons of God” of Genesis 6, or even their offspring. These sons of God, which is one way the Bible refers to angels, sinned by initiating sexual relationships with human women, which contributed to the flood. Jude 6-7 appears to support this interpretation, describing angels who left “their proper dwelling” to engage in sexual immorality being kept in “eternal chains under gloomy darkness” until final judgment. In this view, Christ’s message to them is not the offer of a second chance but rather an announcement of his victory over the physical and spiritual world through his death and resurrection.
However, there are two issues with this interpretation: (1) Jesus’ statement that humans will become like angels in the age to come suggests that angels are not sexual beings and cannot reproduce; and (2) it is heavily reliant on 1 Enoch, a book from the intertestamental period which was not considered part of the Hebrew Scriptures by Jews or early Christians.
A second view identifies the spirits in prison as the unsaved from Noah’s day, who perished in the flood. There are, however, 2 different thoughts on how Christ preached to them: (1) The first: after dying on the cross, Jesus himself descended into hell and offered Noah’s generation a second chance to repent after they had died, which he possibly offers to others (suggested by Peter’s comment in 1 Peter 4:6). But the view that people are given a “second-chance” post-mortem is on sketchy grounds biblically, as well as the view that Jesus actually visited hell after his death on the cross.
A second explanation holds that Christ was preached to Noah’s generation while they were still alive, but enslaved to sin. The view is that the then-future resurrected Jesus was actually preached by Noah, even if he never mentioned Jesus’ name. This is by virtue of the fact that Jesus’ resurrected existence is beyond the physical realm and that he is the only One in whom people find salvation, regardless of the era in which they lived. This view finds support from 2 Peter 2:5, which calls Noah a “herald of righteousness,” which suggests that Noah didn’t just build the ark but also preached, inviting the wicked of his generation to find salvation from God’s wrath with him on the ark. Further, since Paul states the gospel was preached beforehand to Abraham, why couldn’t Noah have preached it beforehand as well?
Against the views that hold the spirits in prison to be humanity, whether spiritually or physically dead, is the fact that “spirits” is not usually used of human beings in the New Testament but rather of evil spirits. Instead, humans are usually referred to as “souls,” and Peter refers to them as such in this very context in 3:20.
Whoever the spirits in prison are, and whenever and whatever the message they received, Peter is using the glorified Jesus’ interaction with them to encourage his readers of the triumph that is on the other side of suffering for those who do good. Even if it costs them their physical lives, there will be victory on the other side, and new life in the Spirit.
